Scarlet

Quick take:

Like Cinder, I found Scarlet to be an enjoyable, light read. In this book, Scarlet uses Little Red Riding Hood as a springboard. Although I felt the romance was a bit rushed, it was enjoyable until the hackneyed ending. Overall, I give it 3.5/5.

Setting:

Whereas Cinder took place in New Beijing, Commonwealth, Scarlet explores the European Federation and space. The reader gets to see both the tiny town of Rieux and the larger city of Paris. This story follows Scarlet teaming up with Wolf to rescue her missing grandmother from a mysterious gang. We also journey with Cinder and her jailbreak accomplish, Captain Thorne. Queen Levana's threat of war continues to loom overhead.

Characters:

Scarlet is our new heroine of the series. She's a strong willed farm girl with a pistol to prove it. She's older than Cinder, but not by much.

Wolf is our big bad wolf. He's a street fighter, former member of a dangerous organization, and the only person that can help Scarlet rescue her missing grandmother. That is, if his secrets don't get them killed first.

"Captain" Thorne is a ladies' man, escaped convict, and former military personnel. His lusting personality can be off putting, given Cinder's age.

Returning

Cinder returns with brand new cybernetic parts and her Lunar glamour gifts. She learns more about herself and what will be her role in the rebellion. I enjoyed watching her come to terms with this new information.

Prince Kai is seen less of, but remains an important figure during the events of this book and the decisions he makes or doesn't make.

Queen Levana also has less of a direct impact in this book, but important plots are revealed.

What it did good:

-Expanding on world building

-Plot pacing

-More action and excitement than Cinder

What could be improved:

-The romantic relationship between Scarlett and Wolf developed too quickly.

-A sudden stop, similar to Cinder

Last thoughts:

If you enjoyed Cinder, I recommend Scarlet. It's not perfect, but it's a quick, fun read for the summer. I look forward to reading Winter.
